Research & Instruction Librarian – 2022-23 Academic Year
Library

About the Role:

Do you want to gain experience teaching information literacy and research skills to college students? Do you enjoy working with a creative and highly collaborative team?

As a member of the Research & Instruction Team in Library and Information Technology (LITS), this position will make important contributions to student success. Your central role will be helping students to become better researchers and critical thinkers: you’ll teach them to conduct library research and to understand and evaluate information resources. You will bring a passion for teaching undergraduates and for ensuring that the St. Olaf Library remains a vital and inclusive resource for the college community.

This is a part-time, ten-month temporary role working 1,040 hours between August 2022 through May 2023. There is a possibility that the position will be extended.

What You’ll Do:

  • Teach information literacy and research skills to students in the college’s First-Year Experience courses: First-Year Seminar and Writing and Rhetoric.

  • Serve as the subject librarian for several academic programs, including history, gender and sexuality studies, and race and ethnic studies.

  • Offer research consultations and other research services to library patrons, and provide on-call research support to other library staff, onsite and online.

  • Collaborate with LITS staff, campus partners, and Carleton College colleagues to create and sustain innovative library services and resources.

  • Contribute to the vitality and inclusivity of the library by actively promoting LITS, engaging with the college community, and demonstrating a commitment to equity and inclusivity.

Who You Are:

Qualified applicants will have a combination of education and teaching experience or other experience that has prepared them for information literacy instruction and undergraduate research support.

We are especially interested in applicants who have a master’s degree in library science or are currently enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program, and who also have teaching experience in an academic library or other higher education setting.

These qualities are essential for candidates: You enjoy teaching and are committed to contributing to the success of college students. You are familiar with, or have a willingness to learn, fundamental information literacy concepts, library research skills, and software used to create and deliver instructional content. You are eager to form and sustain relationships with people. You are a confident communicator. You excel at managing your time and working both independently and as part of a team. You are a thoughtful and generous colleague who will contribute to building a more equitable and inclusive community at the college.
