Electronic Resources Librarian
Library

To provide leadership and expertise in managing the full lifecycle of licensed and open access electronic resources at Carleton College and St. Olaf College. The incumbent will be responsible for reviewing e-resource management workflows, assessment, communicating changes in content and platforms, and identifying and resolving access issues in a timely fashion. This position will also be responsible for batch-loading and processing the bibliographic metadata for e-resource records and is expected to maintain current awareness of trends and developments in the management of and the marketplace for electronic resources.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. E-resource Management - 65% of time
  • Work closely with the staff of the Carleton and St. Olaf libraries and Bridge working groups to ensure clear, consistent and current user-focused access to and presentation of Bridge e-resource holdings.
  • Manage the metadata for all Bridge purchased and licensed e-resources.
  • Evaluate vendor-provided bibliographic records and perform batch loading of record sets (including appropriate record clean-up and deletion) for both Carleton and St. Olaf electronic resources. 
  • Work with vendors and Ex Libris to troubleshoot record quality problems and Bridge access issues, as needed. 
  • Collaborate with other Bridge catalogers and staff to manage e-resource record set workflow and documentation.
  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support for electronic resource access and content issues.

 

  1. Catalog Maintenance – 20% of time
  • Work in partnership with St. Olaf and Carleton College library staff to maintain the shared Bridge catalog and participate in special clean-up and enhancement projects for bibliographic and item data.
  • Perform batch loading of record sets (including record clean-up and deletion) for both St. Olaf and Carleton holdings.
  • Ensure that electronic resources cataloging workflows and policies are coordinated between St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges.
  • Use internal and external tools for batch processing and transforming MARC and other bibliographic metadata formats.
  • Maintain knowledge of Bridge discovery tools and their relation to the bibliographic database. 
  • Work with Bridge catalogers to establish and refine local policies and procedures, especially as they apply to the management of e-resources.

 

  1. General Responsibilities - 10% of time
  • Participate on Library and Bridge teams/working groups as assigned. 
  • Attend all relevant Library and Bridge meetings and functions scheduled during regular working hours.
  • Work collaboratively and in tandem with peers at St Olaf and Carleton to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced.
  • Serve as a backup to other staff as needed and as requested by the supervisor. 
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Bridge leadership.

 

  1. E-resource assessment - 5% of time
  • Coordinate the collecting and reporting of e-resources statistics, such as usage statistics and overlap analysis reports, as needed.
  • Develop mechanisms for evaluating the effectiveness and relevance of the St. Olaf and Carleton libraries’ electronic collections and services. 
  • Maintain knowledge of SUSHI, COUNTER, NISO standards, and other best practices for e-resource statistics.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of the principles of cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and authority control including recognized rules and standards (AACR2, RDA, LCRIs, LC-PCC PSs, LCSH, LCC, and MARC)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to take action when answers to a problem are not readily apparent
  • Ability and willingness to foster teamwork, communication, and collaboration within and between departments
  • Skill in completing tasks accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to be flexible in response to changing needs and priorities
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and software
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget
  • Ability and willingness to commit to the ideas and goals of a liberal arts college and its library
  • Ability to travel between the St. Olaf and Carleton campus on a daily basis, or as needed.
  • Ability to navigate and work successfully in different institutional cultures.
  • Skill in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  ALA accredited Master’s in Library Science or equivalent program experience; maintain a valid driver’s license and meet St. Olaf College driver authorization criteria with a satisfactory driving record

 

Experience:  3+ years experience working in an academic library or other relevant environment; experience managing some or all of the electronic resources lifecycle using a library management system or ERM; experience with a web-scale discovery service such as EDS, Summon, WorldCat Discovery, Primo, etc.; demonstrated understanding of the principles of cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and authority control including recognized rules and standards (RDA, LC-PCC-PS, LCSH, LCC, and MARC) especially as they relate to electronic resources

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  Experience with Alma and Primo (Ex Libris); experience with creating automated workflows for batch processing bibliographic metadata; experience with metadata transformation workflows, especially using MARCEdit or Google App scripts; academic library experience
